Francesco Vanni (1563/64–1610) was the most important artist in Siena at the turn of the 17th century. His works combine dazzling technical virtuosity and brilliant coloring with the naturalistic approach employed by his more famous contemporaries Annibale Carracci and Caravaggio. He painted altarpieces for every significant church in Siena, as well as for Saint Peter’s and other churches in Rome.

John Marciari investigates Vanni’s career, including his connections with patrons and his adaptation of traditional subject matter to serve the Counter-Reformation. Venetian Prints and Books in the Age of Tiepolo

The Republic of Venice, proud Queen of the Adriatic in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, had subsequently undergone a long, slow decline, and by the eighteenth century she could no longer impose peace but, rather, enjoyed it only at the price of a meek neutrality. Nonetheless, although politically weak and intellectually conservative, Venice in the eighteenth century was the site of an astounding creativity in all the visual arts, as well as in music and theater. The production of prints and books was enormous, and the percentage of leading artists making prints was unprecedented. To a great extent this output can be understood as a normal concomitant of the surrounding artistic activity, but some of its impetus may have derived from the economic need to attract visitors; these visitors, in turn, stimulated the volume of print and book publishing throughout the century. Giambattista Tiepolo and Antonio Canal, called Canaletto, twin stars, though in many aspects polar opposites, of Venetian painting in the eighteenth century, both created extraordinary series of etchings during the late 1730s and 1740s. [This book was originally published in 1997 and has gone out of print. This important volume offers the first comprehensive look at the Arthur Ross Collection—more than 1,200 17th- to 20th-century Italian, French, and Spanish prints—and is published to mark the inaugural exhibition of the collection in its new home at the Yale University Art Gallery. Highlights include superb etchings by Canaletto and Tiepolo; the four volumes of Piranesi’s Antiquities of Rome, as well as his famous Vedute (Views) and Carceri (Prisons); Goya’s Tauromaquia in its first edition of 1816; an extremely rare etching by Edgar Degas; and numerous other 19th-century French prints, by Eugène Delacroix, Honoré Daumier, Édouard Manet, Paul Gauguin, Paul Cézanne, and others.
