This book is the first comprehensive guide to the NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale's extensive collection of works by William Glackens, an artist first heralded as an Ashcan urban realist painter and later embraced as America s foremost Impressionist. The Museum is the largest repository of Glackens s work, bequeathed by his son Ira in 1991, and from the collection select highlights were chosen for their aesthetic merit and historical significance. The book represents the first scholarly overview of the Glackens Collection and as such contributes to a new depth of understanding and level of recognition for this important American artist. War Horses: Helhesten and the Danish Avant-Garde During World War II This exhibition is the first to explore the history and significance of the accomplishments of Danish artists working during the Nazi occupation of their country (1940-45), who called themselves Helhesten, such as Ejler Bille (1910-2004), Egill Jacobsen (1910-1998), Asger Jorn (1914-1973), and Carl-Henning Pedersen (1913-2007), among others. It explores their invention of an art of resistance filled with colorful, expressive, abstract forms, which was remarkably similar to and concurrent with that of the American Abstract Expressionists, about which Helhesten artists had no knowledge. They also daringly exhibited their subversive work and published it and their controversial, communal ideas in the journal they produced Helhesten. As a result, they fueled the emergence of the international avant-garde art movement Cobra (1948-1951), which they became part of. Cobra greatly influenced the development of European modern art after World War II. The exhibition includes over 100 works and reconstructs for the first time the most important exhibition these artists staged in Denmark during the war, 13 Artists in a Tent (1941). It draws heavily from NSU Art Museum s exceptional collection of Helhesten and Cobra art, the largest in America, given to the Museum in 1988 by Meyer and Golda Marks. It was organized by NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale and the Carl-Henning Pedersen &amp; Else Alfelts Museum, Herning, where it will travel, and by guest curator, Kerry Greaves, Novo Nordisk Foundation Mads Øvlisen Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Arts and Cultural Studies, University of Copenhagen. Its bi-lingual catalogue (English and Danish), includes color reproductions of many works in the exhibition and issues of Helhesten, as well as 3 insightful essays: Greaves discusses the history of Helhesten and its artists, noted art historian, Michael Leja, writes about American Abstract Expressionism, and art historian, Mikkel Bolt Rasmussen addresses the issue of Danish Art from Helhesten to Scandinavian Situationism. Moreover, the catalogue reproduces four controversial essays written by Helhesten artists and published in their journal Helhesten, as well as The New Realism, that they wrote and published in the catalogue of their 1945 exhibition, Host.

Miami-based collector Martin Z. Margulies owns one of the world's most significant collections of modern and contemporary art and over the past two decades has avidly collected photography that reflects his interest in the human condition. On view at NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale from November 2, 2014 through March 22, 2015, American Scene Photography: Martin Z. Margulies Collection showcases the work of 70 photographers and more than 150 of their photographs dating from the early 1900's to today. Exhibition Catalog: The catalog includes an Introduction by Bonnie Clearwater, Director and Chief Curator, NSU Museum of Art, and curator of the exhibition, followed by her engaging interview with Mr. Margulies about his photography collection that documents the American scene from the early 20th century to the present. Belief + Doubt: Selections from the Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz Collection is organized by NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale and curated by Bonnie Clearwater, Director and Chief Curator. With an emphasis on multi-cultural and women artists, this exhibition highlights contemporary art from 1978 to 2013. Known as the 'Pictures Generation', these artists belong to the first generation of Americans to grow up flooded with television images and advertisements promoting post-World War II consumer culture. The exhibition's title is inspired by one of the highlights of the collection, Barbara Kruger's Untitled (Belief + Doubt = Sanity), 2008, a conceptual work referencing the philosophical nature of contemporary art and an underlying theme of the collection, which instills wonder in the viewer as it questions foundations of beliefs and contemporary life. Among the works shown are Cindy Sherman's Untitled Film Still #19, two early silhouette collages by Kara Walker, a painting by Mickalene Thomas, neon work by Tracey Emin, digital animation by Jennifer Steinkamp, wall relief by Teresita Fernandez and woven trompe l oeil sculpture by Miami artist Frances Trombly, all of which will be on view in the NSU Art Museum exhibition, August 26, 2016 to January 22, 2017. In the early 1960s, several artists, working independent of one another, simultaneously began making paintings based on comic strips, commercial printing, and advertisements. The popular subject matter, commercial graphic design techniques and reference to mass production were dominant features of work by such artists as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist and Jim Dine, whom critics, curators and art dealers quickly grouped together as representing a new art movement. POP ART was the name British art critic Lawerence Alloway coined for this movement, and this short memorable name and the categorization of these artists as Pop artists stuck.

Painting on paper provides Frankenthaler with an arena for experimentation in gesture and control. Her love of paper started in childhood, and she has retained the creative freedom she experienced working on paper in those early years. Over the past 10 years, she has worked almost exclusively on paper and in a scale that sometimes rivals her large canvases measuring seven by six feet. 
Intriguingly, Frankenthaler paints her canvases like watercolors and her works on paper like paintings. For her canvases, she often painted with the stain technique that she innovated during the early 1950s when she began thinning her pigments to the consistency of watercolor and pouring them onto unsized canvas.
