The first major English-language monograph on Icelandic Pop artist Erró establishes his primacy among today’s significant figurative artists. Erró, Iceland’s most prominent painter, receives long overdue critical attention for his contributions to international Pop, late Surrealism, and contemporary figurative painting in this sumptuous monograph. Since introducing exclusively source-image-based painted collage to the European Pop movement in 1959, Erró has produced an influential body of work mining cartoons and art history on canvases marked by political satire and his own cheerfully dystopian observations of human nature. Prescient and timely, Erró’s paintings are marked by a voracious consumption of imagery synthesizing a hallucinatory vision of contemporary visual culture. Often compared to Andy Warhol, James Rosenquist, and Roy Lichtenstein, Erró’s multifigure narratives, refusal to commit to a singular style, and obsession with cartoons set his practice apart. An essay by Ruba Katrib connects Erró to today’s figurative-painting practices, and a chronology by Danielle Kvaran traces his wild figurations of history and subjects, ranging from Winston Churchill to contemporary music icons. The inaugural volume in a new series of books, Kandis Williams documents the Los Angeles–based artist’s exhibition A Line. Interrogating issues of race, nationalism, authority, and eroticism, her topical work is made across collage, sculpture, and video.\nWilliams draws on her background in dramaturgy to envision a space that accommodates the biopolitical economies that inform how movement might be read. The series title Clarion is derived from the Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers’ Workshop at the University of California, San Diego. Octavia Butler attended this workshop in the 1970s. The series captures 52 Walker’s gallery program ethos; a commercial, kunsthalle-like, gallery where shows run for several months, it focuses on showcasing conceptual and research-based artists from a range of backgrounds and at various stages in their careers. Envisioned by Haynes with the aim “to highlight and expand on the shows’ conceptual theses through newly commissioned critical texts, interviews, archival material, and artistic interventions,” Clarion will be a crucial touchpoint for those interested in engaging further with its artists’ practice.

During a residency on Fire Island, artist and writer Hannah Black decided to tackle a highly daunting project: the 2020 novel. The result of her efforts, Tuesday of September or the End, is a slim, playful work of speculative fiction. Written in the aftermath of the early months of the pandemic and the uprisings of summer 2020, the novel explores the ruptures of the year with a satirical sci-fi bent. Black chronicles the lives of two characters, Bird and Dog, as they contend with rapidly changing political possibilities during the pandemic while the run of Moley Salamanders (i.e. Bernie Sanders) concludes and aliens finally invade earth. Through a galvanic vision of how the riots of 2020 might have turned revolutionary, Black offers a meditation on collective life. This crucial novel invites readers to consider who we are―and, by extension, what we are here for―when our normal referents are muted, deleted and upended. 
Hannah Black (born 1981) is a New York–based visual artist, critic and writer from Manchester, England. Her work spans video, text and performance and draws from communist, feminist and Afro-pessimist theory. She is the author of Life (2017, with Juliana Huxtable) and Dark Pool Party (2016). Black is represented by the gallery Arcadia Missa in London and Isabella Bortolozzi in Berlin.
