In 1978, we first meet Melba in the Municipal Building at 1 Center Street, listening to agency representatives describe the horrors of managing city-owned real estate in distressed neighborhoods. The job sounds dangerous but exciting. Melba signs on immediately. She envisions helping her less fortunate Black brothers and sisters with their housing woes. Inspired by real life events, Mr. Jefferson s Pianos and Other Central Harlem Stories, traces one young woman s journey into the confusing world of city government as she manages city-owned property in Central Harlem. Filled with intriguing characters and their humorous, poignant and sometimes sad stories, it is can t-stop-reading enjoyment.
