Henry James O'Brien Bedford-Jones (1887-1949) was a Canadian historical, adventure fantasy, and science fiction writer who wrote over 100 novels and thousands of short stories in the pulp magazines of the early 20th century, earning himself the nickname the King of the Pulps. His works have appeared in a number of magazines, including Weird Tales, and continue to delight readers today with their smooth prose, exciting storylines, and believable characters.

The horseman reined in as his jaded steed scrambled up the shelving bank, and for a space sat there motionless, for which the horse gave mute thanks. The moon was struggling to heave through fleecy clouds, as it was hard on midnight; in the half obscurity the rider gazed around suspiciously. There was nothing in sight to cause any man fear. Behind him rippled the Dee, and all around was desolation. Ardee itself lay a good two miles in the rear, burned and laid waste six weeks before, and ten miles to the south lay Drogheda. Indeed, as the horseman gazed about, he caught sight of a faint glare on the horizon that drew a bitter word from his lips. Dismounting with some difficulty, owing to his cloak and Spanish hat, he examined a long, raking gash in his horse's flank; then flung off hat and cloak and calmly proceeded to bind up his own naked shoulder beneath. His was a strange figure, indeed, now that he stood revealed. He wore no clothing save breeches and high riding-boots; an enormous sword without a sheath was girt about his waist, and the caked blood on his shoulder and cheek made his fair skin stand out with startling contrast.

It's a fascinating stream-of-consciousness article that's practically the same as reading the book over Kurt's shoulder. Former Fawcett pulp editor (and occasional story writer) Jack Smalley reminisces about the halcyon days of rough-paper magazines in a 1966 memoir, "Confessions of a Pulpateer." Long-time pulp fan Link Hullar also looks backward, this time from the vantage point of a baby boomer discovering Doc Savage in the Bantam paperback reprints of the 1960s. Tom Krabacher returns to BnT's pages with a profusely illustrated "pulp places" article about actual Southern California locations mentioned in the hard-boiled detective fiction of Raymond Chandler, who gave us the immortal phrase: "Down these mean streets . . ." Part Two of look at actual court documents from a 1936 lawsuit between Standard Magazines and Popular Publications includes a deposition from publisher Ned Pines, followed by the text of the judge's decision. Having uncovered long-buried original scripts, Old-Time Radio scholar Martin Grams describes a number of "lost" episodes from THE LONE RANGER's first year on radio. A neat bit of scholarship. In this massive issue you'll also find the usual array of departments and a reprinted pulp novelette, along with another portfolio of pulp cover art, scanned from the original paintings.
