A famous art collector, dealer, and indomitable champion of modern art, Emmy (Galka) Scheyer (1889–1945) is best known as the founder of the Blue Four artists’ group, whose members were Lyonel Feininger, Paul Klee, Alexei Jawlensky, and Vasily Kandinsky. Through her contacts with the art world in Europe and America, Scheyer acquired a remarkable collection of paintings, works on paper, and sculpture. This book presents almost five hundred items from the collection, reproducing most in full color. It features numerous works by the Blue Four, as well as those by eminent European artists and artists Scheyer knew in California.

Born in Russia, Vasily Kandinsky (1866-1944) was one of the most original and influential artists to emerge in the twentieth century. He is known primarily for his daring use of color in startling non-objective works. Vasily Kandinsky: A Colorful Life is the most comprehensive and fully illustrated account to date of his early work, from 1900 to 1914, the period in which he made his radical shift to abstraction - and in so doing altered the very concept of art itself. The works presented here are from the collection of the city museum of Munich, or Stadtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus. They were given to the Galerie in 1957 by the artist Gabriele Munter, who was Kandinsky's companion from 1903 to the beginning of World War I. They are being shown at the Galerie in their entirety for the first time in a major exhibition, for which this book serves as the catalogue. In compelling, readable text that draws on the latest research, noted Kandinsky expert Vivian Endicott Barnett illuminates the life and work of the artist. She begins with sketches made during his student years in Munich and considers also his interest in folk art, myths and fairy tales, the small oil studies from nature, medieval scenes, woodcuts, glass paintings and landscapes he made before progressing to the first abstractions. Included as well are the important paintings from the series of Improvisations, Impressions, and Compositions, which are among the highlights of his involvement with the Blue Rider group, and later works from his Bauhaus and Paris years. This sumptuous book includes more than 700 examples of Kandinsky's early genius, most of them brilliantly reproduced in full color. The works are organized chronologically, and paintings are accompanied, when relevant, by preliminary sketches and prints.

The Thannhauser family has a long history of collecting art:  a Thannhauser founded the Moderne Galerie in Munich before World War II; when Justin K. Thannhauser (whose collection is represented in this book) fled Nazi Europe he and his wife continued to collect important paintings; the Thannhausers later bequeathed their impressive collection of impressionist, postimpressionist, and early modern paintings to the Guggenheim museum. Famous works such as Picasso's Woman with the Yellow Hair, Renoir's Ball at the Moulin de la Galette, and Toulouse-Lautrec's Dancing at the Moulin Rouge are included, as well as works by Gaugin, Manet, Degas, and Velázquez. This second volume in the two-volume catalogue raisonné of Kandinsky's drawings is devoted to Kandinsky's thirty-eight sketchbooks. A companion to Volume One which focused on his individual drawings, it illustrates and documents his sketchbook pages, with drawings dating from 1889 to 1943, many of which have never before been published. This volume also includes a commentary essay by the author - an internationally recognized Kandinsky scholar - which addresses aspects of his work that have not previously been studied and sheds new light on the artist's creative process. Appendices include a range of rare wood sculptures and decorative objects that Kandinsky created and color reproductions of his paintings and watercolours not illustrated in previous volumes.
