Because she published only seven poems and a play during the last forty years of her life, scholars believed Barnes wrote almost nothing during this period. In addition to profiles of a postman, vaudeville performer, and other local personalities, Barnes interviews Lillian Russell and Alfred Stieglitz and describes an encounter with James Joyce.
