Monumental brasses became popular during the Middle Ages and were commonly mounted on the walls and floors of cathedrals to commemorate the great and wealthy. Often depicting knights and bishops, these representations are a major source of information concerning arms, armor and dress in the Middle Ages. Written by a member of the Monumental Brass Society, this book provides a history of the manufacturing of brasses from the Middle Ages through the Victorian revival and up to the present. It includes a list of many surviving brasses and where they can be found. It also provides instruction on the care and maintenance of brasses, with notes on the proper techniques for brass rubbing.

King Arthur's Round Table: An Archaeological Investigation

The vast wooden disk known as King Arthur's Round Table has hung on the wall of the great Hall of Winchester Castle for six hundred years. But what is it? Was it ever a table? When was it made? Why is it hanging on the wall? When was it painted with the famous image it now bears? And why at Winchester? In 1976 the Round Table was taken down from the wall and thoroughly examined by a team of historians and scientists assembled by Martin Biddle, and its history began to emerge. Built in the reign of Edward I, it was probably the centrepiece of a feast held at Winchester after a forgotten tournament celebrating marriage plans for the king's children; Edward III, founder of the Order of the Garter, had the top hung up in the castle hall as a symbol of his interest in the chivalric idea of the company of Arthur's Round Table; Henry VIII had it painted and used the figure of Arthur to support his claim to be arbiter of European power. This most enigmatic of objects at last yields up these and other secrets to scientific analysis and historical deduction. A detailed study of incised effigal slabs and brasses from London workshops from AD 1250 to 1400 and their relationship with the production of monumental brasses. It focuses on the Cumoys, Septvans, Seymour, Basyng, and Ashford styles from before the Black Death. 170 slabs from England and Wales are studied in terms of their style, inscriptions, date and distribution recreating a picture of the operations of the London marblers and their workshops. The authors conclude that it is possible that the incised slabs and brasses were made in the same workshops, and possible even by the same people. Fresh light is thrown upon the dating of early brasses. Illustrated throughout with photos and rubbings.

Egglestone marble, also known as Teesdale marble, is one of a group of so-called sedimentary 'marbles', such as the better-known Purbeck and Tournai marbles, in which natural calcite cement has filled the original pore-spaces to such an extent that the stone is capable of receiving a high polish. Its merits include its attractive grey-brown surface finish when polished, its suitability when freshly quarried for detailed carving, and the fact that it is capable of being extracted in very large blocks and slabs. The description of the stone in this study is based on polished samples taken from the quarry known as 'Abbey Quarry', in the picturesque landscape in the North Riding of Yorkshire (England). Egglestone marble has received little attention in the past, perhaps because there is no evidence of its use for building purposes. No examples have been found of its deployment for columns or other structural elements in buildings, but there is a wealth of material and documentary evidence of its widespread employment for other artefacts, and this work provides a thorough study of the them and their settings.
