Austrian architects Baumschlager Eberle are the focus of this instalment. The practice, founded in 1985 by Carlo Baumschlager and Dietmar Eberle, has evolved into a global firm comprising eleven offices in countries throughout Europe and Asia. Today it is run by Eberle together with several partners. Academic research and practical experience come together in the architecture of Baumschlager Eberle, which primarily concerns itself with the relationship between density and the atmosphere of cities, as well as the possibility of designing zero-energy buildings. The issue includes a theoretical essay by Eberle, along with extensive profiles of sixteen projects completed since 2000.

Creator of some of the most emblematic houses in Spanish architecture, Alberto Campo Baeza has also designed prominent works like the Museum of Memory and Caja Granada Headquarters, both in Granada, and the Offices for the Junta de Castilla y León in Zamora. These and more are featured among a total of 20 essential buildings by Campo Baeza. An introductory essay by his collaborator, Alejandro Cervilla, talks about the poetic vocation underlying the conception of his houses, while Kenneth Frampton reflects on the main themes in Campo Baeza’s career, which shape an architecture built with geometry and light, at once tactile and visual, massive and immaterial.

The winning proposal for the Museum of the 20th Century in Berlin, one of the most important competitions in the contemporary scene, is the coda of this double issue on Herzog &amp; de Meuron, the fourth monograph AV dedicates to the Swiss studio. With an introductory essay and thirteen critical texts by Luis Fernández-Galiano, the issue covers 34 works and projects developed over the last four years. Among them, two recently completed buildings already rise as landmarks of contemporary architecture: the Tate Modern extension in London and Elbphilharmonie Hamburg.

The magazines third instalment devoted to Renzo Piano Building Workshop covers the studios output over the last decade through a selection of twenty works and ten projects. It also presents a conversation between Renzo Piano and Luis Fernández-Galiano, in which the former takes stock of his career from its beginnings, plus an essay by Lorenzo Ciccarelli explaining the offices working method. The volume concludes with a collection of ten previously published texts from the last twenty-five years by editor Fernández-Galiano, dealing with the role of construction, the importance of context and scale, and the relationship with art in the work of Renzo Piano Building Workshop.

Between art and architecture, the work of Mauricio Pezo and Sofía von Ellrichshausen is a consistent mix of geometric, spatial, and structural experimentation, where each piece is conceived as a variation within a series. The introductory text by Fernando Pérez Oyarzun unveils the key aspects of the work of the Chilean architects and their particular way of understanding architecture, and is followed by a chronological journey through 32 works and projects developed since 2002, when they set up their studio in Concepción, 500 kilometers south of Santiago. This itinerary includes the bold prisms of their first houses which brought them world renown as well as their latest projects.

AV devotes this issue to the recent work of Norman Foster, coinciding with the exhibition organised by Fundación Telefónica with the Norman Foster Foundation in Madrid. The texts included deal with the twelve sections of the exhibition, complemented by a biographal profile of the British architect by J. M. Ledgard, an article by Paul Goldberger on the building of the Foundation in Madrid and the architects own thoughts on the spirit and objectives of this new institution. The future of building and of technique are analysed in articles by Neri Oxman on Mexico Airport and by Ricky Burdett on the Droneport project. Deyan Sudjic on the SkyCycle and Mohsen Mostafavi on Masdar explore contemporary sustainability and mobility.
