This publication resulted from the six weeks the late Mrs. Mary Meigs Atwater and Harriet Tidball spent in Guatemala in early 1946. There has been a strong trend from harness-controlled weaves, toward finger-controlled designs and the unusual techniques which can be achieved on the handloom only. The textiles of no part of the world can provide the inspiration and technical virtuosity as do the native costume pieces of Guatemala. For those who cannot travel and collect examples firsthand, and for travelers who wish to understand the textiles they see, the only published source for exact directions and designs for the hand weaver are in the writings of Mary Atwater. Certainly no one could present these weaves with greater clarity, authenticity, and beauty than Mrs. Atwater has here, nor interpret the country and its customs with greater charm. 46 pp.
