El libro trata acerca de un capitán militar que al ir caminando por las montañas en un anochecer de 24 de diciembre, va reflexionando sobresu propia vida, trayendo a la mente recuerdos de su infancia y juventud relacionados con la cultura y con la religión. En eso, mientras la tristeza y la incertidumbre respecto a esa noche loinvadían, su criado le hace saber que ha encontrado a un sacerdote que se dirige a su pueblo a celebrar la Nochebuena. El cura le invita a pasar la noche en su pueblo y con eso se abre la posibilidad depasar una noche agradable. Durante el camino el militar comienza a conocer a un cura ejemplar, a un verdadero apóstol e imitador de Jesús, además de ser un hombre muy feliz, aunque su rostro dejara vertambién melancolía. Al llegar al pueblo le sorprende y emociona ver el tipo de relación que este cura tiene con la gente, y el trato tan familiar de la gente para con él.

El encuentro de los dos hombres se da en una aldea perdida en plena montaña, cuando uno va de camino hacia su curato y el otro más allá, hacia la ciudad que es su punto de destino, les hace cambiar unas cuantas palabras como compañeros de viaje.
