Counternarrative is a genre of "hard times"--of economic, political, and social disenfranchisement. It tends to emerge in response to perceived threats to principles, practices, and resources about which we care deeply. In "good times"--when resources and privileges are (more) equitably distributed within society, the impetus for challenging the status quo is negligible. Until there is some felt-sense of personal or communal dissonance, there is no need for public stories of incompetence, abuse, inequity, or anomie. 
The time for counternarratives of teachers work has arrived. The effects of funding cuts to health, education, and social services combined with technology-instigated unemployment have transformed public schools in North America into omnibus social agencies where teachers are expected to serve not only as intellectual and moral mentors but also as surrogate parents, social workers, counsellors, security guards, cultural ambassadors, paramedics, and psychologists. 
The stories in this collection are stories of revelation rather than celebration. The authors speak of the fears, frustrations, despair, weariness, insights, and resilient hope they experience as they try to make daily meaning of their work with children, colleagues, parents, and administrators. Their stories, while emotionally charged, are not rants. They are political acts of care and resistance through which the authors attempt to make visible and open to scrutiny the work they do and the conditions in which they attempt to do this work.
