Q. Why write a book on the law? A. Because of the gospel. When Jesus began his ministry the first sermon he preached issued the following command: 'Repent and believe in the gospel'. But of what were people to repent? Is there a clear moral standard in the Bible that reveals the holiness of God, the sinfulness of man, and the purity of new life in Christ? Yes, there is. The place of the moral law in relation to the gospel has become on of the most controversial issues for the evangelical church today. The end result is that less than 1% of church members can list the ten commandments. It is sadly true that some preach the law without the gospel. Some preach neither the law nor the gospel. However, no matter how hard one tries, one cannot genuinely preach the gospel without the law. It is hoped that this small volume may be used to God in awakening zeal for his glory, encouraging faithful preaching, promoting wise living, and initiating true revival.

The book of Daniel has inspired Christians throughout the centuries to faithful and obedient service in the face of danger and persecution. It calls us to dedicated commitment to God and his kingdom. In this EP Study Commentary, Allan Harman shows how Christ must have supremacy in everything as we await the final revelation of his glory. As humans we can never fully understand the mind of God, but he has revealed what is necessary for us to know of himself and his ways. God has given us sufficient teaching to encourage us to persevere, but we are also able to look forward with expectancy. Daniel and his companions were living far from their own homes and land, in a culture that was dominated by a faith situation completely antagonistic to their own, yet they remained conscious of their continuing commitment to the God of Israel. While occupying significant posts in the Babylonian empire, they refused to abandon their loyalty to, and trust in, God, sometimes at great personal cost, and were prepared to die rather than renounce their faith. Faced with the might of Babylon, the exiles might have been tempted to doubt whether the God of Israel was truly God, or whether there was any hope for his covenant people. However, the prophecies revealed to Daniel assured them, and Christians today, that, though human kingdoms will continue to rise and fall, and despite seeming setbacks from time to time, God's kingdom will ultimately prevail and he will be acknowledged as the sovereign Ruler over all.

Isaiah has been called the 'fifth gospel'. Why? Because in it God speaks through his prophet of his people's departure from truth, the need for repentance and the redemption provided by a coming saviour. Isaiah's imagery is some of the most beautiful, and terrifying, in the Bible.
It was written in the 8th century BC at a time of material prosperity. This wealth had brought increased literacy and so God's people could be brought back by a book of 66 chapters to understand a world that had spiritual, as well as physical, dimensions.
This is a key Old Testament book, as well as charting a key change in the life of God's people it provides some of the most important prophecies fulfilled only in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. Its lessons for the contemporary church are particularly apt.
Too often modern commentaries become a discussion between commentators rather than an exploration of what the text has to say to contemporary readers. Allan Harman's methods follow those of Leon Morris and Allan McRae in that he devotes most of his energy to discovering what God is saying through his prophet, rather than what we are saying amongst ourselves.
