The miracles recorded in the Bible, and particularly those recounted on the pages of the New Testament, have posed problems for rationalistic skeptics as well as reverent students of Scripture. In studying the miracles of the New Testament, it is important for us to realize that they do not appear on the page of Scripture randomly, or without assignable reason. They belong to periods of God's progressive revelation and appear only when God is speaking to His people through His accredited messengers (cf. John 5:36). They, therefore, become a means whereby He declares His gracious purposes to His people. The challenge before us as we study the New Testament is twofold: first, to acknowledge and defend the integrity of the biblical record; and second, to understand what lesson is being taught by means of each miracle. The former requires a diligent study of the original text, whereas the latter necessitates an acute awareness of the theme and purpose of each biblical writer. These lectures [originally delivered in such form on the Ely Foundation at Union Theological Seminary in New York] provide a vigorous, scholarly apologetic aimed at assessing the historical interpretative problems, and of providing, wherever possible, a suitable and satisfactory solution. While Glasgow professor Bruce's treatment is avowedly to defend the biblical record, this does not mean that exegesis is ignored. The Training of the Twelve

One of Jesus' most important endeavors during His short ministry involved the preparation of His twelve disciples for the work they would need to accomplish. The importance of studying Jesus' methodologies cannot be overstated. While there is much we can learn from His words and deeds, it is His work in training the disciples that facilitated the promotion and growth of the Kingdom in the first century. Whereas the nineteenth century liberal scholars were saying that the disciples invented the story of Jesus, The Training of the Twelve provides sufficient proof that it is Jesus who transforms the disciples into the Apostles, and that their testimony is true.   This compelling defense of the portrayal of Jesus and His disciples in the Gospel accounts is, if anything, even more necessary now than it was when it was first written. Scholars today continue to perpetuate many of the claims of the nineteenth century liberal scholars and have even gone beyond them in denying the legitimacy of the Gospel accounts of the life of Jesus of Nazareth. Books of a devotional or homiletical character on some or all of these abound; but of works of a more elaborate and critical description on the subject, the number in the English tongue is small. Without disparagement to such as exist, it is believed that a fresh attempt to unfold in a scholarly yet genial manner the didactic significance of these beautiful sayings of our Lord will not be unwelcome. How far the present publication supplies what is wanted it is for others to judge. A feature of the work is the classification of the parables under general heads, making available thought affinities for the elucidation of their meaning. Another feature is strict adherence to the historical method of exegesis as distinct from the allegorising method pursued by the Fathers, and largely favoured by the chief English writer on the subject, whose strength and weakness both lie in the extent to which he has laid patristic literature under contri bution for the interpretation of the parables and the literary enrichment of his pages.
