Pomegranate's Hiroshige s Flowers coloring book features 22 works of art by the famed Japanese printmaker. The 48 page 8 1/2 x 11 in. book contains 22 coloring pages that are blank on the back so they can be cut out and displayed. Each illustration is reproduced in a small, color version of the original artwork and as a full-page black line drawing. Hiroshige II, who lived from 1826 to 1869, was a student of the top designer of Japanese landscape prints, Hiroshige I. After his teacher died in 1858, he inherited the famous name and carried on the artistic tradition. The twenty-two pictures in this coloring book are from his print series Thirty-six Selected Flowers, designed in 1866. In this series, Hiroshige II cleverly combines two different subjects in each print. First, he shows a close-up view of beautiful flowers. Then, in the distance behind the flowers, he shows a landscape scene of the place where the flowers grow, somewhere in his home city of Tokyo. However, the name 'Tokyo' did not become official until two years later, in 1868. In the titles of the prints, the artist sometimes calls his city by the new name Tokyo and sometimes by an old name that means 'Eastern Capital.' Today some of the gardens shown in the prints have been replaced by tall buildings. But since many people in Japan love flowers, some of the old gardens in Tokyo are still there, and there are new parks and gardens too. Japanese gardeners developed many different varieties of flowers. When you color the pictures, you can follow the colors used in the prints or invent some new varieties of your own. The last page of the book is blank, for you to draw your own favorite flower and show where it grows. A garden? A park? A pot inside a house? Or maybe it is a wildflower that grows in the woods or mountains.

Pomegranate's Samurai coloring book features 22 illustrations from an epic Japanese adventure story. Coloring pages are blank on the back so they can be cut out and displayed. Published with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. One forty-eight page 8 1/2 x 11" book with twenty-two images to color. Each illustration is reproduced in a small, color version of the original artwork and as a full-page black line drawing. One of the most popular writers in nineteenth-century Japan was Bakin, who lived from 1767 to 1848. His most famous book, The Tale of the Eight Dog Heroes of Satomi, or Satomi Hakkenden in Japanese, was published in 106 installments from 1814 to 1842. Fans waited eagerly for the publication of each new chapter of the exciting story, which tells of eight heroes, each with the word for 'dog' (in Japanese, inu) in his family name. (In Japanese, the family name comes first, with the personal names after it.) The eight heroes are as brave and loyal as faithful dogs. They use a combination of sword fighting, magic, and strategy to defeat the enemies of the Satomi clan, and after many adventures, they are finally successful. Just as best-selling books today are made into movies, The Eight Dog Heroes became a Kabuki play that was produced many times with different actors. Many artists drew designs for woodblock prints showing the poses and expressions of the actors and the colorful costumes and stage sets. When you color the pictures, you can follow the colors they used or try new combinations. The last page is blank so that you can draw your own picture of a thrilling scene that you would enjoy seeing on stage or in a movie.
