Bookscouter Android Application

We are excited to announce the new Bookscouter Android application. To get started you need to go to the Android Market, search Bookscouter and download the app for FREE. When opening the Bookscouter app the first time you will be prompted to download a barcode scanner. The app uses your phones digital camera to scan the barcodes so the scanner is a must. When using the app you can either scan the ISBN or type it into the search bar. Let us know how it is working!

This app works brilliantly *except* (at least on my Samsung Intercept) it won’t allow manual input of ISBNs that end in an ‘X’ – will only accept numeric characters.

Input using the scanner function works fine, albeit more slowly than with manual input (due to the often sluggish Barcode Scanner app, on which Bookscouter’s Android app ‘piggybacks’).

I would also add that (at least with manual ISBN entry) the app worked even in an area where my phone had very weak signal availability (at sale in library basement) – I had tried, without luck, to reach this website from that location (either via m.bookscouter.com or the main site), yet the app itself gave me impressively speedy results!

I’ll continue to use this, and will, of course, update my Android Market review from (a still very positive) 4 stars to 5, whenever the ‘X’ glitch is worked out.

Thanks for putting this out there! It’s extremely helpful.

    Victoria,

When the App was being written, I’m sure I tested the ability to use an x. Have you tried upper and lower-case versions? I’ll need to give it a try again and see what has happened. What hardware are you using?

I love that you’ve created great apps for the iphone and now for the droid! But because both these phones are kinda pricey, do you think that a possible app is in the works for Nokia and their OVI store?

Right now I’m manually inputting all ISBNs via your mobile site when I’m out, and then rescanning when I’m home via computer. I’m thinking of buying the Nokia Smart Phone and plan (that’s on the cheap), and it would make my day if I could look forward to an app from you guys.

Let me end but saying that you’ve made it really possible to earn a supplemental income without scanning dozens of book sites, and I’m grateful — so regardless I’ll always use you’re mobile and website!

Is there a wireless scanner out there that would work with the Android instead of entering the isbns manually?

I have a ipod touch with camera…will the application work on it?

I wasn’t aware that there was an touch with a camera, but I believe it should work. The app is free so you can give it a try and let me know how it goes.

The Android app should be able to use a phone’s camera to scan the barcode. I’m also experimenting myself with using a USB-based scanner as well. My initial test on a specialized device worked, and I’m waiting on some cables to try it on a regular Android phone.

@Richard, I’m having somebody modify the Android App to work with a Bluetooth laser barcode scanner. I’m hoping that it is ready in a few weeks and will be sure to post about it on the blog when it is released.

Please let us know when you have this capability up and running for the Iphone App as well. A Bluetooth laser brcode scanner would be perfect for my operation! Thanks for all your efforts. Your site rocks!
